The first version of "Twenty Flight Rock" was co-written & recorded by Eddie Cochran in 1956 with backup on a bull fiddle and the thumping on a soup carton. Cochran re-recorded a second version in 1957 that scored as a moderate seller. The rockabilly song's lyrics end on a surprisingly morbid note relative to other pop music songs of the time. Inspired by Elvis Presley, Cochran's image as a sharply dressed good-looking young man with a rebellious attitude epitomized the stance of the 1950's rocker that captured teenage frustration and desire into the early 1960's. He died at age of 21 in a road accident while travelling in a taxi during his British tour in 1960. Cochran has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Also, back in in 1957, a young musician by the name of Paul McCarthy performed this very song when he auditioned for John Lennon and his pre-Beetles band called the The Quarrymen.
