Why was Jesus baptized by John? Was He authenticating John’s mission? Was He identifying with our fallen condition, our mortality, showing that He was ‘made like us in every way’ (Hebrews 2:17). Furthermore, He was demonstrating perfect humility and submission to the Father, showing us what is required to approach the holiness of God, and in this, the Father declared, ‘this is my Son in whom I am well pleased’.
Christ not only symbolized His own death and resurrection, but the path all of us must follow through self denial. Our old self is buried with Him and we are raised to life as new creations.
