Nintendo really just dangled bait and everyone fell for it - hook, line, and sinker. People seriously haven't realized they've been manipulated into doing EXACTLY what Nintendo wanted.
As someone who's studied marketing , I cannot emphasize enough how hilarious this situation has been to watch. It should be preserved as a case study in marketing tactics for the future.
Nintendo's Sales & Marketing team have truly outdone themselves - I haven't laughed this hard at online gamers in a LONG time.
Okay, enough laughing.
Let's dive into a discussion on tech demos, consumer psychology, and marketing shenanigans, as we explore what exactly this Welcome Tour is, what it does & does not do, and how Marketing successfully manipulated gamers into doing what they wanted.

![Anatomy of a Tutorial: What makes a Good Game Tutorial?
Tutorials come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and forms. Some consist of simple pictures and text, while others may be extremely complex set-pieces designed to be as cool as possible.
Regardless of how they are structured, tutorials are always THE single most important feature of any game. They teach players how their games work and also introduce them to the game experience. Games would practically not function without them.
Despite that, they have a tendency to get overlooked by both players and less experienced developers alike, who either skip past them or construct them haphazardly in a rush to get to the more fun and complex parts of the game. As a game developer, it is absolutely important for you to understand how tutorials work, and choose the right tutorial for your game.
But what makes these tutorials tick?
What makes one type of tutorial suitable for one game, but awful for another?
How should you, as a developer, decide how to set up your games tutorial?
Well... hopefully this video can shed some light on all this, and give you some idea on where to start.

![The Surprising Simplicity of Pokemons Electric Type
Electric is a very straightforward Type: its all about going fast and zapping stuff.
But is that all it is...? Well... kinda... actually yeah...
Still, Electric was designed this way it is for a reason, and it fulfils an important role within the Type chart, especially back in generation 1. Its design has also subsequently impacted the rest of the series as a whole, and continues to do so till this very day.
So for this video, lets review the history and origin of the Electric Type: the type of the second most famous mouse in media history.

![The Flying Type is not a Real Pokémon Type [archeType Talk]
Flying does not exist.
A strange statement, since its clearly meant for Pokémon with wings. But thats aesthetics. Im talking game design.
In terms of game design, Flying lacks a clear identity, with all Flying Pokémon and Moves having seemingly nothing in common. And its progression across the ages also feels similarly lost and confused.
To understand, lets look at the history of the Flying Type, and analyse how it changed across the generations.

![Why Critical Hits Exist, and How they are Designed [Game Designer Explains]
Critical Hits are such a staple of video games as a medium, to the point where players have long forgotten why they exist.
Some people even question their inclusion in a game, and wonder if certain games would be better off without them.
They might be correct. But that isnt the point of this video.
This video is about why developers implement Critical Hits into their games in the first place, how they are designed, and what effect they have on players overall.
This isnt a complaint - its an exploration of how a game gets built. Perhaps itll change you view on your favorite RPG.

Eliciting such a reaction from players requires more than simply writing him as a jerk. Gameplay elements need to support the experience too. So, lets have a closer look at Blue, and examine just how the game designers created one of the most famous Rival experiences in gaming history.

![How the Fighting Type rose from the Weakest to Strongest
The Fighting Type failed harder than any other Type. At least in Gen 1.
Even setting the Psychic Type aside, Fighting just failed to do its basic job. No other Type managed to fumble as badly as it did.
Over the years, Game Freak took numerous steps to gradually improve Fighting, from adding new Types, to creating several moves, to even adding 4 and a half Legendaries that one time back in Gen 5.
Not to mention making it more widely available to other Types as coverage moves. Including the infamous Focus Miss.
By today, its finally managed to live up to its initial reputation as the ultimate physical attacking Type. But the road to get there was certainly a long and rocky one.
So lets follow the Zero to Hero story of the Fighting Type, and see how it went from historical jobber to modern day champion.
