The Science, Craft and Consequences of Children’s Content.

Children’s content isn’t neutral. From pacing and repetition to storytelling and tone, the way content is made can directly affect how children think, feel and learn. This session brings together science, production and industry perspectives to explore why quality matters – not just creatively, but developmentally and commercially – and what’s at stake for audiences and the future of the sector if we get it wrong.

What does “quality” in children’s content really mean – and why does it matter?

This session moves beyond defining quality and instead focuses on its impact. Drawing on emerging research in developmental science, we’ll explore how different content choices – including pacing, repetition, emotional clarity and narrative structure – can influence children’s attention, stress responses and learning.

Bringing together voices from research, child development, production and commissioning, the discussion will connect this science to real-world creative practice. How do producers intentionally design content for young audiences? Where do platform and market dynamics support – or challenge – those choices? And why does high-quality content make sense not just editorially, but commercially?

Aimed at producers and creators, this session will offer practical insight into how content decisions shape audience experience – and what’s at stake for both children and the industry if quality is not prioritised.
