A kilogram of pure uranium-235 could release tens of millions of kilowatt-hours of heat, while a kilogram of diesel contains only around 10 to 12 kilowatt-hours of chemical energy. That enormous gap makes nuclear propulsion look exceptionally attractive on paper.
But a reactor keeps producing decay heat after shutdown. It needs continuous cooling, shielding, emergency heat removal, and trained oversight even when the ship is no longer moving.
