Airbag launching, or the marine balloon method, offers a highly flexible and cost-effective alternative for moving smaller cargo ships and barges into the water. Long cylindrical bags made from heavy-duty synthetic tire cord layers are placed beneath the hull and inflated with high-pressure air to lift the ship off its building blocks.
As the ship rolls toward the sea like a giant conveyor belt, engineers strictly regulate the internal air pressure between 0.2 and 0.6 megapascals to distribute the massive load evenly. The rolling speed is kept under 0.3 meters per second to prevent uneven deformation before Archimedes' principle of buoyancy takes over the load.
