A single light source sends energy in every direction so only a tiny amount reaches any one observer. As a ship moves farther away the light quickly becomes too weak to see.

A parabolic reflector bounces light into one direction. Rotating it creates the familiar lighthouse flash that ships can see from around the horizon.
