While this low-cost sludge serves as an efficient energy source for massive marine engines, its dense chemical composition contains up to 3.5% sulfur by weight, leading to severe atmospheric pollution.
When burned at temperatures exceeding 1,300 degrees Celsius, the sulfur reacts with oxygen to form sulfur dioxides and trioxides, which combine with atmospheric water vapor to produce acid rain. These emissions account for roughly 13% of global sulfur pollution, triggering severe respiratory issues and health risks in port cities and coastal communities worldwide.
