Vertical partitions can reduce the force created when grain shifts. By separating the hold into sections, they constrain the cargo on each side and reduce the listing force, although operators must weigh that benefit against more difficult loading, discharge, and fumigation.

Horizontal divisions are much less effective. A tween deck creates an additional grain surface that can shift, meaning both the upper and lower sections can contribute to the vessel’s list.
