More than half of new farms fail in their first five years. In almost every case, it's not a growing problem — it's a money problem. After a decade interviewing hundreds of farmers and running a farm supply business serving thousands of customers, the same financial mistakes show up again and again.
Seven that kill new farms before they get a chance: no business plan (four questions on one page — what are you growing, what does it cost, who buys it, how much will it bring in), underestimating costs (budget everything, then add 20% for what you haven't thought of yet), taking on debt without a payback plan (start small, prove the model, then scale — in that order), not tracking numbers (pick three to start: expenses, revenue, hours worked), not understanding cash flow (profit is an annual number, cash flow is a weekly reality — plan the gap, fund the gap, survive the gap), no target market (find the buyers before you plant, not after), and no marketing plan (talk to 1,000 people instead of 10 and you have 100 customers instead of one).
None of these are growing problems. They're business problems — and every one is preventable. You just need a plan, a budget, a way to track your numbers, and a market to sell into. The growing part is the part you already love.
