The most common reason new farmers quit isn't money. It isn't exhaustion either — not exactly. It's that most of that exhaustion is self-inflicted. Bad decisions made with good intentions.
After interviewing hundreds of farmers over the past decade, the pattern is clear. Six operational mistakes show up on almost every farm that burns people out.
Too many crops (profitable farms run 15–20 varieties and grow them exceptionally well — every crop you add is another system to manage). Underestimating time (planting and harvesting is maybe 40% of the job — the rest is irrigation, bed prep, packing, delivery, records, customer communication). Ignoring soil (won't hurt you in year one, hurts you in year three — the cost of prevention is always lower than the cost of recovery). Assuming good weather (hope is not a management strategy — crop protection and season extension pay back fast). Burnout (schedule one full day off a week, non-negotiable — if you think you can't afford it, that's exactly why you need it). Starting without experience (work a full season on someone else's farm first — not a weekend, a full season).
None of this is complicated. It all requires treating farming like a business, not a passion project.
