How many hours did you work on your farm last week? And the harder question: how many of those hours were spent running the business versus improving it?
"Work on your business, not in your business" is in every business book ever written. Everybody nods. Almost nobody does it — and on a farm it's even harder, because the work in your business is physical and urgent. Something always needs harvesting, watering, packing, delivering. That urgency is exactly what keeps you stuck.
When you're drowning in daily operations, every decision is reactive — put out the fire, move to the next fire. You can't do the analysis that actually grows the business (what to cut, which market stream underperforms, where you're losing hours to a broken process) because you physically don't have the bandwidth. And the fix isn't adding a planning session on top of an overloaded week. It's subtracting enough work that the space opens up on its own.
That's why this ties straight back to the 80/20 crop audit. Drop the bottom of your product list and you free up beds, seeds, mental energy, and hours that didn't exist before. That's where foresight lives — planning next season's crops in November instead of March, catching a declining market stream before it collapses, deciding whether a second market would add profit or just add hours.
Three moves: run a crop audit and cut the dead weight, kill your worst-performing market stream, and block two protected hours a week for farm thinking — not farm work. If you're working 80 hours and can't protect two of them to think, the system is broken. Busier isn't better. Better is better.
