If you've been online at any point during the past few weeks, you probably know who Gabby Petito is. News of the 22-year-old's disappearance quickly made national headlines, sparking the interest of millions. The public's overwhelming interest in her case has arguably played a significant role in the investigation and search for Gabby.
But, what about the thousands of others that go missing every week? What differentiates the Petito case from so many others?
It's been established that certain cases receive a disproportionate amount of media coverage, for a variety of factors. Understandably, this disparity oftentimes leaves families with missing loved ones frustrated and hurt. Carmen Day, whose son, Jelani 'JJ' Day, has been missing for almost a month, recently voiced her frustration in an interview with Newsy:
"'Her [Gabby] face is plastered everywhere, and the FBI is involved...And I do not understand why Jelani doesn’t get that same coverage; Jelani doesn’t get that same attention.'"
How can we ensure that all missing persons receive the coverage they deserve?
I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
