Why did the Hutts wait five years to return to Tatooine? Why did they let Bib Fortuna of all people keep Jabba’s territory for that long? The answer can be found in the War of the Bounty Hunters comics that take place in between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The short version is that Crimson Dawn resurfaces under the leadership of Qi’ra. She steals Han’s carbonite slab from Boba Fett and auctions it off to the highest bidder. This infuriates Jabba, who goes and wins the auction, but Darth Vader also arrives and claims Solo for himself, hoping to once again use it as a trap for Luke Skywalker. Jabba reluctantly accepts the Sith Lord’s demands and heads home to Tatooine. But another Hutt who was secretly in league with Crimson Dawn named Bokku, uses Vader’s actions as an excuse to declare war on the Empire and attacks the super star destroyer Executor. The rest of the Hutt Council is present and fails to stop Bokku, so Vader boards their ship and slaughters them all. Jabba dies shortly after, meaning the *entirety* of the Hutt Council is dead. So the rest of the Hutt Cartel probably fought for a good long time Game of Thrones style until a new Hutt Council could be established. We also don’t currently know what happened to Jabba’s heir, Rotta the Hutt…but it sounds like The Mandalorian and Grogu will finally tell us more of his story.
