Who is Duel of the Fates actually about? Maul or Anakin? The song was originally composed by John Williams to be about the lightsaber fight between Darth Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Qui-Gon Jinn, the idea being that the outcome will be a major shift in Anakin’s fate. When Qui-Gon dies, Obi-Wan has to take up Anakin’s training, a task he isn’t ready for. But if Qui-Gon had lived, Anakin may have had the master he needed. We hear the song again in Attack of the Clones when Anakin is racing off to save his mother. Again, her death forever shifts his fate. So the song was absolutely meant to be about Anakin. But these things change and shift over time. The Force theme was originally meant to be Ben Kenobi’s theme. The main Star Wars theme was Luke Skywalker’s theme. Now they have come to mean so much more. Duel of the Fates will also be forever linked to Maul, because how could it not be? I saw some people pushing back against the song appearing in Shadow Lord, but you could absolutely argue that it can mean something for Anakin and Maul at the same time. Duel of the Fates can be about more than one character’s fate.
