We’ve been sitting on this video since February, and we’d completely forgotten how tired we were when we filmed it, which is evident in the fact we’ve just signed up to build more of these high-wire feeders!
Regardless, we are so excited to see the bears using this amazing enrichment and hear the great feedback from the keepers about how well they are working as part of their enrichment program.
We were contracted by ZSL Whipsnade to construct four of these high-wire feeders for the brown bears. Over a two-day period, we built two land feeders and two that span the pool. The idea is to allow the bears to spread out and have their own space if they wish, while the different orientations of the structures allow for different behavioral goals to be achieved, depending on what is hung on them.
The positioning of the poles doesn’t detract from the natural look of the enclosure, but at the same time, it allows for some incredible views from a public point of view and provides an opportunity to see behaviors that they wouldn’t normally be able to see.
All metalwork used in this construction has a rating of at least 1700 kgs, meaning that multiple bears can use a single high-wire feeder at the same time.
