When did R5-D4 become a hero of the Rebellion? The story The Red One by Rae Carson in the book From a Certain Point of View tells us that R5’s malfunction in A New Hope was purposeful to help R2-D2 get away from the Jawas so he could reach Obi-Wan Kenobi. The two droids discussed the fate of the galaxy on the sandcrawler, and R5 agreed to help, wandering off into the desert after the Empire tracked down and murdered the Jawas. That act alone I think should earn him the title of hero of the Rebellion…but it does sound like R5 made his way off Tatooine and met Carson Teva at some point. That part of the story is currently unknown to us. And I’m very curious why the little droid would return to Tatooine after being stuck there for decades…but maybe he became fond of the desert world and decided to go back.
