Gial Ackbar was the admiral who led the Rebel fleet at the Battle of Endor. His military service spanned all the way back to the Clone Wars, where he served as the captain of the Mon Calamari Guard, protecting his king, Lee Char from Separatist attacks. A year after the end of the Clone Wars, the Empire invaded Mon Cala. While they fought back, the battle resulted in the capture of Lee Char and the escape of Raddus and Ackbar, who made their way to the Rebel Alliance. Gial was given command of the fleet after Raddus’s death at the Battle of Scarif, and he oversaw evacuation efforts after the Battle of Yavin. Shortly after he returned home to help liberate his people, who were rallied by a stirring speech from their dying king. Several Mon Calamari ships joined the Rebel fleet, but many of them were destroyed in the Battle of Mako Ta, which saw the deaths of many Alliance leaders. Ackbar escaped, and remained on the move, so he was not present for the Battle of Hoth, although he once again assisted with evacuation efforts. He was a magistrate for the trial of Lando Calrissian, when it was revealed that the smuggler had betrayed Rebel intelligence to save his friend, Lobot. It was ultimately decided by the council that Lando should work to pay off a debt of two hundred and fifty million credits to the Rebellion. That number may have decreased dramatically thanks to Calrissian’s work with Ackbar to destroy the second Death Star in the Battle of Endor. Ackbar remained with the New Republic, fighting the Empire all the way through the Battle of Jakku, where he once again led the fleet. During peacetime, Gial proposed the creation of the T-85 X-wing, and eventually retired. But he returned to the fight to join General Organa’s Resistance. He perished during Kylo Ren’s attack on the Raddus shortly after the evacuation of the D’Qar base. His son, Aftab carried on his legacy, helping defeat the First Order and the Sith Eternal at the Battle of Exegol. #starwars
