Following up on my previous article about training volume, I want to discuss the issue of muscular failure. In Part 1 I want to focus on why I think using muscular failure can be a useful endpoint for discussing or comparing research or training studies. This is especially important within the concept of the effective reps framework.
To address the topic here, I want to talk about general concepts. I'll discuss basic muscular physiology, muscle fibers types, how recruitment/rate coding work and then define the concepts of fatigue, muscular or task failure and exhaustion.
