Shalom! Me yamo Andy. Ke haber?
Hello! My name is Andy. How are you?
Let's talk about the Ladino language/Judeo-Spanish

Ladino, a Romance language that developed in the 15th century within the Spanish Jewish community, was spread by Sephardic Jews after their expulsion from Spain. As they migrated to regions such as the Balkans, Turkey, and Greece, Ladino took root in countries like Turkey (Izmir and Istanbul), Bosnia (Sarajevo), Greece (Thessaloniki and Monastir), as well as in Romania and Bulgaria. It can be written in both the Hebrew (solitreo) and Latin alphabets, though spelling in the Latin alphabet can vary by country (e.g., Shalom, Şalom, or Salom). The language thrived until the 20th century, particularly before the Second World War, after which it spread again as Jews fled to the USA, Brazil, Israel, and Argentina.

Today, Ladino faces the threat of extinction, but efforts have been made to preserve and promote it. Figures like Moshe Shaul and Matilda Koen Sarano have published books to sustain the language for future generations. The establishment of the "Autoridad Nasionala del Ladino i su Kultura" in 1997 further supports its study and preservation. Depending on the community, there are several ways to name this language, such as Ladino (literally Latin), Djudeo-Espanyol (Jewish Spanish), Katelyano Muestro (Our Castilian), Djudezmo (Judaism), Djidyo (Jewish), Haketia (Tell), etc. Ladino is referred to by various names, such as Djudeo-Espanyol or Haketia (in Morocco). Deeply connected to Jewish religious and cultural traditions, Ladino is a vital element in Sephardic psalms, songs, stories, and proverbs.

This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
