Finnish is a Finnic language of the Uralic family, spoken by most people in Finland and ethnic Finns abroad. It is one of Finland's two official languages, along with Swedish. In Sweden, Finnish and Meänkieli (mutually intelligible with Finnish) are official minority languages. The Kven language, also mutually intelligible with Finnish, is spoken by a Finnish-descended minority in Norway's Troms and Finnmark counties.
The Kven language is a Finnic language or group of Finnish dialects spoken by the Kven people in northern Norway. It has the status of a minority language due to political and historical reasons, although some consider it a mutually intelligible dialect of Finnish. While Finland views it as a dialect, Norway officially recognizes it as a minority language, and many Kven regard it as a separate language. There are about 1,500 to 10,000 native speakers, mostly over 60 years old. Middle-aged speakers have some knowledge of the language but don't use it frequently, keeping it endangered. People under 30 rarely speak or know Kven.
