Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in South Asia. It is Pakistan's national language and lingua franca, where it is also an official language alongside English. The Constitution recognizes Urdu in India and has official status in several states. Urdu is a Persianised register of the Hindustani language, sharing much of its vocabulary, phonology, syntax, and grammar with Hindi, making them mutually intelligible in casual conversation. However, as the formality of the language increases, mutual intelligibility decreases due to Urdu drawing formal vocabulary from Persian and Hindi from Sanskrit.
Pothwari is a dialect of Punjabi, specifically Lehnda Punjabi, spoken in northern Pakistan, Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. It is also used by Hindus and Sikhs who migrated from Pothwar in 1947. The Pothwari-Punjabi-speaking diaspora, known as Mirpuri, exists in the UK. There is no standard writing system for Pothwari-Pahari, as it is not taught in schools, leading to varied writing practices. Pahari is more commonly used in Indian Rajouri and Poonch, as well as Poonch in Pakistan, while Pothwari is prevalent in the Mirpur division and other Pakistani areas.
