Hill Mari, also known as Western Mari, is a Uralic language closely related to Northwestern Mari and Meadow Mari, forming the Western Mari group with the former. It is spoken in the Gornomariysky, Yurinsky, and Kilemarsky districts of Mari El, Russia. Hill Mari uses the Hill Mari Cyrillic script and is co-official with Russian and Meadow Mari in the Mari El Republic.
Chuvash is a Turkic language spoken mainly in the Chuvash Republic and surrounding areas in European Russia. It is the only remaining language of the Oghur branch of Turkic languages and is native to the Chuvash people. Despite being an official language of Chuvashia and taught in schools, the number of speakers has declined from 1 million in 2010 to 700,000 in 2021 due to a lack of interest in preserving linguistic diversity in Russia. UNESCO considers it endangered, with Russian dominating daily life and few children likely to become fluent. Chuvash is highly distinctive and not mutually intelligible with other Turkic languages.
