White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee-Sanders stated, “The president once again has maintained that it's important for us to have a dialogue with Russia,” while speaking to the press in Washington DC, on Tuesday.
The Russian election was a topic of lengthy debate in the press conference, with a journalist asking for Sanders to comment on US President Donald Trump's phonecall to Russian President Vladimir Putin after the result. “The President joined other countries in these calls, both Germany and France have reached out, as well as President Obama in 2012,” Sanders said. She then added that, despite this, “we're going to be tough on Russia, particularly when it comes to areas that we feel that they have stepped out of place.”
Asked whether or not the White House considered the Russian elections "free and fair", Sanders deflected the question and stated instead, “We don't get to dictate how other countries operate. What we do know is that Putin has been elected in their country and that's not something that we can dictate to them how they operate. We can only focus on the freeness and fairness of our elections.”
