Acting US Secretary of State Heather Nauert said that Russia has 'lots of tentacles' and 'is a beast from the deep sea' while describing what the US and its allies allege as Russian involvement in election meddling and the poising of former double agent Sergei Skripal, during a press conference in Washington.
According to Nauert, 60 intelligence officers operating under diplomatic cover were expelled and declared 'persona non grata' in what was "the largest single expulsion of Russians ever ordered by the United States" as a response to the United Kingdom's accusation of Kremlin-involvement in the Skripal case.
"If Russia wants to improve relations it needs to first acknowledge its responsibility for this attack and cease its recklessly aggressive behaviour," Nauert said, before adding that an apology from Russia is expected.
27 countries, as of Wednesday, have taken measures against Russian diplomats in the wake of the Skripal incident, including Canada, Australia, France and Germany.
