Throughout the month of October, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad ran their recently-restored 2-6-6-2 Mallet number 1309 extensively. In its first fall back under steam, Western Maryland 1309 pulled 5 trips between Cumberland, Maryland and Frostburg, Maryland each week. In addition to the steep mountain grades, the spectacular fall colors allowed for great shots along the 16-mile journey. The locomotive put on a great show and closed out the busy 2022 fall season in style. On this day, 1309 was equipped with a beautiful New York Central 6 Chime, a whistle that would have found a home on a New York Central Hudson, Mohawk, or Niagara in the steam era. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading in the autumn with Western Maryland 1309.
