Just acquired a 2006 Volvo V50 D5, very nice condition, but has some issues, that made it fairly cheap, but obviously needs some work done.
Definitely not a replacement for the Jeep, i just need something cheaper to run for the long distance journeys, but it should not be a boring ride either, that's why i opted for the 180hp 2.4ltr 5 cylinder Diesel with the 5 speed Aisin AW55 Auto box.
This episode is an initial walk around and a few essential checks. following parts will cover the repairs and addressing the rather long list of stored faults.
Main issues so far:
General lack of maintenance, intermittent check engine light, gearbox shifting rough sometimes, suspension bushes worn, shocks dead, tailgate struts dead,
automatic headlight adjustment not working,....just to name a few
This thing is full of electronics, essentially a bunch of networked processors. A lot of issues might be just poor contacts so the most important thing to have is the right diagnostic tools, (available on ebay or from Volvo for big $$), a normal OBD scanner won't be suitable as it does not cover the Volvo specific stuff.
The huge amount of sensors and actuators makes it almost impossible to diagnose issues, without Vida/DICE, especially if they are random errors.
Probably another reason why they go fairly cheap, the dealerships charge big money for fixing little things because it's time cosuming, spare parts are quite affordable, but without software, Joe Public can do pretty much nothing.
