Finally the laser cut parts arrived so we can carry on with the mystery project.
But before we do this, another job gained some priority.
What we making here is a large spacer for something we'll show in part 2 of this episode.
This lump of steel just fits on the old South Bend 14.5" lathe, the final diameter is about 360mm (14.2"). I was quite surprised how big the lathe actually is, because even a 15" part would just turn fine without rubbing, Seems in 1942 they haven't invented the inflated specs we used to see nowadays.
Anyway, it's a rather simple part, a bit of welding and turning, a few steps and parallel surfaces, then dividing and drilling some holes and hoping it fits. No particular challenges so far, except that the calipers were about 10mm too short so we had to do a slight modification to it.

The reason why it took me almost 4 weeks to get the plates cut is that the first laser cutting company i've tried just couldn't be bothered to get me a quote (even i phoned shortly after emailing !). When i chased them up after 2 weeks they waffled something about a "minimum order quantity" , so why took that 2 weeks of thinking ? ... they got a flashy website, but that's probably it !
I think i am going to send them a link to this video ... :-)
Anyway, I now got it quick, trouble free and even cheaper from another laser cutting shop, parts look good and i can take the off cuts for free, what else do you need ...
I definitely will go there again with my next parts order.
