We went back and forth on if we should build our dream cabin or we should build a shipping container house and the container home won!! We are really excited to share this next chapter with you and can’t wait to see how the project unfolds.
Shipping containers have a lot to offer for our off grid situation because of their instant ability to provide a waterproof, strong structure. We have been debating different design options for a while, but having three shipping containers next to each other gives us enough space and flexibility to create a really comfortable living situation (hopefully!). In terms of color and size, we basically just bought the containers that were available at the time--20ft was all we could get up our road, so the 40ft containers weren't even an option. We got two standard shipping containers that look like they are at the end of their service life, but are totally watertight still, and then we got one High Cube container that is much newer so we could have higher ceilings and more insulation in one of the three at least.
We plan to do one shipping container office, one kitchen, and one bedroom/living room. This will be a massive undertaking and probably will take the better half of a year to get it all done. So hope you’re ready for a lot of container content!
Big hugs,
Dana
ps thank you to Tyler from Island Industries for his amazing help with the shipping containers - https://www.island-ind.com/
pps - we've had a TON of rain since the gravel pit was built, and the entire area has stayed really dry so far, so it looks like it was worth the effort. That whole area has a gentle slope downhill, and Lou spent a week scraping all the mud and topsoil off everything, but mudseason will be the real test of how well it works ; ) One day we'll probably have to remove the woodchips we put down as they break down into soil, but it will be perfect for a gardening project!
