3 Steps for Beautiful Fall Leaves 🍂
👉 Layer 1: Wet-on-Wet
Create a variegated wash by painting in your first (lightest) color, and dropping in 1 or 2 other colors into it while the first color is still wet. By painting in colors onto paint that's still wet, you'll create soft wet-on-wet effects.
Before your paint dries completely, add some splattering with water for extra texture.
*Allow to dry.*
🌟 Pro tip: If you struggle with your paint drying too fast, make sure you're taking time when painting your first (lightest) layer. Run your paintbrush bristles over the entire shape with a small amount of water multiple times so that it stays wet for a longer time.
👉 Layer 2: Wet-on-Dry
Paint in veins with a thin detailing brush and one of the darker colors you were using in your first layer. Focus on adding the main veins and tapering the ends as they move away from the central vein.
🌟 Pro tip: Observe your reference closely and draw your veins with a pencil before painting them in. If you're going for higher levels of realism, you don't want to guess at the direction and length of these veins, or make them too stiff.
👉Layer 3: Final Details
Darken certain sections of your veins and also along the outer edges of your leaves here and there, using one of your darker colors. This will add definition and will add realism to your leaf.
🌟Pro tip: Avoid stark-looking lines or marks and outlines, as this will take away from the realism.
