🚨Have your landscape paintings ever felt flat or overworked?

One of the biggest secrets to creating believable depth isn't adding more detail. It's understanding aerial (or atmospheric) perspective.

Here are 3 principles that instantly make landscapes feel more spacious and realistic:

🎨 1. Values become lighter with distance.
Foreground elements usually have the darkest darks and the greatest contrast, while distant objects become lighter and lower in contrast.

🌿 2. Details gradually disappear.
You don't need to paint every tree, rock, or branch in the distance. Simplifying textures and softening edges creates a much stronger illusion of depth. Save your highest levels of detail and texture for the foreground.

💙 3. Colors shift as they recede.
Objects farther away tend to become cooler, less saturated, and hazier because of the tiny particles in the atmosphere between us and them. Foreground colors, on the other hand, generally appear warmer, richer, and more vibrant.

Once you start looking for these three clues in nature and in your reference photos, you'll notice them everywhere.

They're simple principles, but they can completely transform your landscapes, whether you're painting from life, from a photo, or entirely from imagination.
