I happened to catch our educational northern water snake while she was shedding her skin - she presses against the glass to help peel the skin off. Northern water snakes (Nerodia sipedon) are not venomous, but they tend to be quick to bite if handled so they are best left alone (this one happens to be unusually mellow).
