Join us on an unforgettable journey deep into the heart of West Borneo, as the Ministry of Forestry and our partners, YIARI, release rehabilitated orangutans back into their natural rainforest home.

These orangutans - many of whom were rescued from captivity or human-wildlife conflict - have spent years recovering and learning the survival skills needed to thrive in the wild. Through expert care, intensive rehabilitation, and post-release monitoring, these incredible individuals are being given a second chance at freedom in Bukit Baka Bukit Raya and Gunung Tarak National Parks.

This release is part of a long-term conservation effort to rebuild wild orangutan populations and restore rainforest ecosystems. With every orangutan that swings into the canopy, hope is reborn for this amazing species.

During our Christmas Appeal, many of you helped raise vital funds for orphaned orangutans like him, supporting our partners, YIARI’s surrogacy programme in Indonesia. Thanks to your kindness, we’re so pleased to share that Randy has now been paired with a surrogate mother: Seponti. When Randy was rescued during a joint operation by BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners, YIARI, he was just two years old and being kept in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan. He was weak, undernourished and living in heartbreaking conditions, with barely enough room to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, and vets also found evidence of earlier trauma in the form of a healed leg fracture. Now, Randy is making lovely progress in rehabilitation. Over the last couple of months, he has been getting to know Seponti, who was herself rescued as an orphan back in 2015. Their bond has been growing steadily, and Seponti is already showing encouraging signs of accepting Randy as her own by carrying him and being protective of him. Randy still has a long way to go, but this is such a positive step in his journey. Thank you for helping make moments like this possible. Last Friday, we got an emergency call about a wild ocelot who had ended up trapped inside a bathroom in someone’s home. By the time we arrived with a SINAC official, he had already gotten out. A short while later, he was found hiding inside a hollow tree. It was obvious he was in bad shape, so we darted him and brought him back to the rescue center as quickly as we could. Once he was with us, the full extent of his injuries became clear. He was desperately thin and weak. He had a large infected wound on his neck, bite wounds across his body, an exposed fracture on his right forelimb, and an older fracture on his hip. We ran X-rays and blood tests, and after speaking with a veterinarian who specializes in wildcats, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. That never feels routine to us. It never feels clinical. And it never gets easier. When an animal dies in our care, it hits us hard because we know what they have already been through before they reach us. Fear. Pain. Stress. Suffering that no wild animal should ever have to endure. You do everything you can to help, you hope for a different outcome, and sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is spare them any more pain. Run free.$
