Pocket, a little howler monkey, was found all alone before being brought to our rescue center by SINAC. Now safe in our care, they spend their days basking in the sun - a simple joy that’s actually an important part of their recovery. Those warm rays give them vital vitamin D, helping them grow strong and healthy again.

Pocket was named by Vanessa, who became a Friend of International Animal Rescue when she set up a monthly gift to support our work. Their generosity is helping to provide the love, care and sunshine that rescued howler monkeys like Pocket need to heal and thrive.

Last Friday, we got an emergency call about a wild ocelot who had ended up trapped inside a bathroom in someone’s home. By the time we arrived with a SINAC official, he had already gotten out. A short while later, he was found hiding inside a hollow tree. It was obvious he was in bad shape, so we darted him and brought him back to the rescue center as quickly as we could. Once he was with us, the full extent of his injuries became clear. He was desperately thin and weak. He had a large infected wound on his neck, bite wounds across his body, an exposed fracture on his right forelimb, and an older fracture on his hip. We ran X-rays and blood tests, and after speaking with a veterinarian who specializes in wildcats, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. That never feels routine to us. It never feels clinical. And it never gets easier. When an animal dies in our care, it hits us hard because we know what they have already been through before they reach us. Fear. Pain. Stress. Suffering that no wild animal should ever have to endure. You do everything you can to help, you hope for a different outcome, and sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is spare them any more pain. Run free.$

He was only two years old - a helpless baby orangutan found alone, terrified, and trapped in a tiny cage in an illegal gold mining area in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. His name is Randy. When a joint team from the BKSDA West Kalimantan and our partners YIARI reached him, they found him living in heartbreaking conditions. The miner who kept him had built a crude cage barely big enough for Randy to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, his small body weak and undernourished. Beneath his soft fur, our partners discovered signs of an old fracture - a healed break on his leg, proof that Randy had suffered a serious traumatic incident before his rescue. Randy’s story is the tragic result of human activity pushing deeper into orangutan habitat. As forests are destroyed and land is cleared for illegal mining, orangutans lose their homes - and their safety. When a baby is found alone, it almost always means his mother is gone, caught in the crossfire of habitat loss and human conflict. Randy is now at YIARIs rehabilitation center, but this is only the very beginning for him. His recovery will be long, difficult, and incredibly costly. He’s receiving the basic medical care and nutrition he was denied for so long but learning how to be an orangutan again will take years of patient, specialized support.
