Snow has blanketed the new bear rescue center in Ushi, run by our partners FPWC.

The bears are taking it all in stride, moving sleepily through the snow before returning to their dens to rest. This slower pace is a natural part of their hibernation cycle, helping them conserve energy through the colder months.

After years of confinement, seeing them wander freely through their huge new enclosure is a beautiful reminder of how far they have come.

It is a peaceful winter scene now, but in just a few months the snow will melt, the grass will return, and Ushi will be lush and green once again.

Last Friday, we got an emergency call about a wild ocelot who had ended up trapped inside a bathroom in someone’s home. By the time we arrived with a SINAC official, he had already gotten out. A short while later, he was found hiding inside a hollow tree. It was obvious he was in bad shape, so we darted him and brought him back to the rescue center as quickly as we could. Once he was with us, the full extent of his injuries became clear. He was desperately thin and weak. He had a large infected wound on his neck, bite wounds across his body, an exposed fracture on his right forelimb, and an older fracture on his hip. We ran X-rays and blood tests, and after speaking with a veterinarian who specializes in wildcats, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. That never feels routine to us. It never feels clinical. And it never gets easier. When an animal dies in our care, it hits us hard because we know what they have already been through before they reach us. Fear. Pain. Stress. Suffering that no wild animal should ever have to endure. The miner who kept him had built a crude cage barely big enough for Randy to turn around. He was being fed scraps of banana and bread, his small body weak and undernourished. Beneath his soft fur, our partners discovered signs of an old fracture - a healed break on his leg, proof that Randy had suffered a serious traumatic incident before his rescue. Randy’s story is the tragic result of human activity pushing deeper into orangutan habitat. As forests are destroyed and land is cleared for illegal mining, orangutans lose their homes - and their safety. When a baby is found alone, it almost always means his mother is gone, caught in the crossfire of habitat loss and human conflict. Randy is now at YIARIs rehabilitation center, but this is only the very beginning for him. His recovery will be long, difficult, and incredibly costly.
