Wat Pho, also known as Wat Po, is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha in Bangkok, featuring one of the largest Buddhas in all of Thailand. The stunning gilded Buddha is 15 meters or 50 feet high and 46 meters or 150 feet long. The soles of the feet of the Buddha alone are 3 meters or 10 feet high and 4.5 meters or 15 feet long, and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. What makes this temple a must-see is not only does the temple complex feature the reclining Buddha, but it features a 33 foot tall standing Buddha, very colorful and ornate chedis or pagodas, an ordination hall with a gold and crystal three-tiered pedestal topped with a gilded Buddha made of a gold-copper alloy, with a nine-tiered umbrella, and overall, there are over 1,000 Buddhas here. The temple is considered to be Thailand’s first university. It houses a school of Thai medicine, and is also known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage which is still taught and practiced at the temple. Visiting Wat Pho was definitely a highlight of my visit to Bangkok!
