Great Question from a recent Wellness Wednesday:
If I pee before bed, why do I wake up to pee again without drinking more water?
Time for a biology lesson!
Water actually travels through your intestines, assisting stool out of the exit.
Here is the pathway:
The small intestine handles the vast majority of water absorption. The large intestine (or colon) absorbs most of the remaining water, turning liquid digestive waste into solid stool.
All water absorbed through the walls of the intestines passes directly into the bloodstream.
The bloodstream carries this water to the kidneys. The kidneys act as the body's filtration system, determining how much water the body needs to maintain healthy blood volume and fluid balance.
Excess water and dissolved waste are processed by the kidneys into urine, which travels to the bladder and is eventually excreted.
Ultimately, water from the colon recirculates through the body before it can be processed into urine. Hence why you can have a delay between your water intake, and your bathroom visit.
