What if your body hasn’t turned against you?
When I was diagnosed with lupus at 16, I was taught that my immune system was “attacking” my body. I had severe arthritis, rashes, antiphospholipid antibodies, and lupus nephritis so serious that I was told I was heading toward kidney failure and dialysis without aggressive treatment.
Thankfully, my doctors helped save my life.
But years later, after changing my nutrition and lifestyle and seeing my lupus symptoms and abnormal labs disappear, I began looking at my body very differently.
My ANA became negative. My lupus antibodies disappeared. My kidneys healed, the proteinuria resolved, my antiphospholipid antibodies disappeared, and I eventually came off my medications. More than 20 years later, I still haven’t had another lupus flare, after 12 years of chronic disease when I was younger.
And I realized something:
My body had never stopped fighting FOR me.
As a teenager, I ate pizza almost every day, bags of Doritos, drank Coca-Cola instead of water, and barely ate nutritious foods. In medical school, I lived on caffeine, Diet Coke, and coffee.
Yet every morning, my body kept me alive.
When I finally began giving it what it needed—Hyper-Nourishing plant-based foods, water, exercise, sleep, self-care, and healthier relationships—12 years of illness transformed dramatically within months.
That experience completely changed the relationship I have with my body.
Instead of thinking, “My body betrayed me,” I learned to think:
“My body has been fighting for me this whole time. How can I help it?”
If you’re alive and listening to this today, your body is still working for you.
So befriend it.
Give it nourishing food.
Give it water.
Give it sleep.
Move it.
Speak kindly to it.
Surround yourself with healthy relationships.
And give your body the care it deserves.
You may be amazed at what it can do when you finally start working WITH it instead of being angry at it.
