When consumers shop for diamond rings, there’s a misconception that a higher clarity will make the diamond more beautiful and sparkly. The truth is far from that. In this video comparison, we review GIA/AGS graded VVS1 vs VS2 diamonds and place them side by side.
This comparison takes place under various types of lighting conditions and simulates real life environments you will typically find yourself in.
First of all, VVS1 clarity is the second best grade on the clarity scale. It stands for very very slightly included and typically only has minute inclusions that can be seen only from the pavilion side of the diamond. It is extremely clean and I can say with 100% certainty that clarity and durability will never be an issue or be seen with the naked eyes.
On the other hand, VS2 clarity represents very slightly included. Most of the gem quality diamonds in the market fall under the SI and VS categories. VS2 diamonds can have a range of different inclusions and a minority of them aren’t eyeclean. However, if you made a careful selection based on tangible data, you will have an eyeclean diamond where the inclusions will never be seen with the naked eyes.
The price difference between a VVS1 and a VS2 diamond can be as high as 40% and even more at larger carat sizes. Yet, there’s actually no noticeable differences when they are worn on a hand or finger.
If you had noticed in the various lighting, you would have seen the spectacular light performance and sparkle from the diamonds. That’s due to cut quality and has not to do with clarity. As long as a diamond is eyeclean and the inclusions don’t impact brilliance, a VS2 diamond will look just as good as a VVS1 diamond.
Now I want to hear from you. If you are given a choice between a VVS1 and a VS2 diamond on a limited budget, would you get a smaller sized VVS1 diamond or a larger carat size VS2 diamond. Would you spend more on a high clarity grade or would you rather save money on the diamond ring purchase?
