The 3 most common diamond simulants in the market are CZ, moissanite and white sapphire. CZ is the cheapest diamond alternative where the cost can be up to 1/1000 of the cost of a real diamond. Moissanite (both man made and natural) cost about a tenth of a diamond and is often market as being superior because of its ability to disperse light (fire).
In this video, we compare cz vs moissanite vs diamond and see what happens to them when a diamond tester is used on them.
CZ can easily be detected using the gemstone tester and it registers a non-diamond result. However, moissanite actually tests out to be a REAL DIAMOND on the meter. This is a false positive and can be a problem especially if an unethical seller is attempting to offload a fake diamond to you at a high price. As for the real diamond ring, it tests positive as a real diamond.
So, how do you tell if a diamond is real or fake if you are using a tester similar to what I am using? The key is to use a 10X loupe and use it to eyeball the facets of the moissanite for a doubling effect.
As you can see, a diamond tester like this has some problems detecting moissanite vs diamond because it uses a heat probe. Since moissanite and diamond both have similar thermal properties, both of these gemstones register as a diamond on the tester.
Most other simulants like CZ or morganite or white sapphire can be accurately detected.
