Very often, first time engagement ring shoppers get confused between choosing a VVS and VS diamond ring. Which is better and is it necessary to pay the extra price for a VVS diamond? Are the benefits of buying a VVS diamond far better than that of a VS diamond graded by GIA?
One common phenomenon I come across when shopping for a diamond ring is that some dealers actively promote VVS diamonds for their exceptional clarity and make fictitious claims that they make the diamond more beautiful. There is some truth to that if you are comparing garbage tier clarity like I1 or I2 against a VVS diamond. But the claims tend to fall short when you compare them to VS or SI clarity diamonds.

And some people have the misconception that VVS diamonds are a good investment. That’s far from the truth.
The fact is, diamonds are bad investments and this applies to D/IF diamonds as well simply because there are too many of them in the market. Unless you are bidding for a diamond worth millions of dollars, I can assure you that EVERY single diamond you buy at the retail level is a BAD investment.
Should You Buy a VVS diamond or VS diamond?
Now, there are some circumstances where it makes sense to buy a VVS diamond and that’s when you are buying large size step cut diamonds or when there is a symbolic reason for you to do so.
In most cases, a VS diamond is more than sufficient to get an eyeclean, sparkly diamond. In fact, I personally think VS diamonds have more advantages than a VVS diamond. First of all, the pro of getting a VS clarity over VVS clarity is lower prices. The other advantage is that the inclusions that you see under a 10X magnification can also serve as a means of identification because it is a unique “birthmark” of a diamond.
Many people find value provided by VS diamonds as they offer a superb balance of cost and practicality. Chances are, when you review this Youtube video, you probably can’t tell any visual differences between these 2 engagement rings.
