In this video, we open a delivery package from Brilliant Earth containing a newly purchased antique engagement ring.

The ring is made in 18k white gold and features hand engraved details along the shanks of the ring. The center stone is a 0.55 carat, F color, SI1 clarity diamond graded by GIA.

We will assess the visual differences in 2 common environments and allow you to decide which is better for yourself. In the first half of the video, we place both gemstones under office lighting to see their contrast patterning and brightness. In the second half of the video, we place the moissanite along side the diamond ring under in sunlight. This is done for the purpose of assessing fire (colored light return) In both segments, you will see that the moisannite appears darker than the diamond due to their steeper cut. To state the obvious, we typically want brighter looking gemstones instead of darker ones. In terms of dispersion, both moissanite and diamond have good fire. One of the contributing factors for this is that moissanites are doubly refractive and tend to bend light more. On the other hand, diamonds have a better balance of brightness and fire when they are cut well.
