We started the month of June with a reset. It went okay. You didn't seem to mind a wander through the terrain that's lesser travelled by whisky enthusiasts; the mass-market, 40-43%, entry-level, age-stated, best selling malts globally.
Despite finding a couple of bottles of dull, I didn't mind it either. In fact, I found a couple of others that were really not bad at all.
We discovered that if we are to continue to judge these and contextualise them against our more favoured, natural pours, we should really know for sure what level they're at. Or at least - I should. That way, we know that our favoured whiskies deserve the extra attention. And extra currency.
But, amongst the Top Ten list there were many, many omissions. So that's how we’ll close out June.
It's impossible to catch them all, of course, but we have another ten of these malts - none of which make the Top 10 best-seller list. However they are designed in a similar way for a similar market. We'll do the same as we did last time; reset our frame of reference, reset our palates, and reset our prejudices and try each of them with an open mind and a sharp eye on budget-friendly, globally available offerings.
Maybe we’ll discover one or two more that fare better than expected.
