#Volcanic purple sunsets have been sighted around the world all summer and much of this fall, thanks to an injection of aerosols into the atmosphere. Mostly from sulfer dioxide and the components its breaks down into. These chemicals, once in the stratosphere, precipitate out very slowly. In the meantime, Beautiful sunsets and sunrises result from the extra scattering in the upper atmosphere. Several paintings have widely been thought to be inspired by the volcanic sunsets following the Krakatoa and Tambura maga-eruptions in the 1800s. Those went so far as to influence global climate, sometimes in the extreme. Raikoke and Ulawun's eruptions weren't enough to cause this. But pretty sunsets followed, here are some captures and a quick explainer! Perhaps soon #HungaTonga will make more volcanic sunsets, especially in the southern hemisphere.
