On July 21, 1961, Virgil "Gus" Grissom launched into outer space from Cape Canaveral, FL aboard the Liberty Bell 7. He became the second US astronaut to travel into space as part of NASA's mission titled "Project Mercury." The launch went flawlessly as the shuttle traveled through the atmosphere. Trouble didn't hit until the Liberty Bell 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean.
