I recently visited the Western Railway Museum in Suisun City, CA, for the first time. The site is located in the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta east of San Francisco where strong winds support a turbine farm that supplies electricity to the area.
I knew the museum featured vintage streetcars and interurban cars but I had no idea about the extent of their collection. Cars representing the Sacramento Northern, Southern Pacific, Key System, San Francisco Municipal Railway and San Jose’s Peninsular Railway can be found on display. They have even restored one of the PCC street cars that I rode while attending San Francisco State back in the late 1960’s.
The museum also operates street cars and interurban excursions on their tracks with the longest ride being a 45 minute round trip. On this day I rode Peninsular Railway #52, a 1910 vintage wooden street car, and shot some video from the front passenger seat along the old Sacramento Northern right of way.
