A true legend in the business, Van McCoy wrote some of the very best R&B songs in the 60s – titles such as Nancy Wilson’s “Where Does That Leave Me”, Barbara Lewis’ “Baby I’m Yours” and Irma Thomas / Esther Phillips’ “Some Things You Never Get Used To”.
In the 70s he embraced the dance/disco genre. He wrote and produced “To Each His Own”, a #50 charter for Faith Hope And Charity in 1975. That same year, as an artist, he released the album, “Disco Baby”. Fueled by one of the tracks, “The Hustle”, the album reached #12 on Avco. “The Hustle” did even better on the Hot-100, making it all the way to #1 in the summer of 1975.
Van’s “Lonely Dancer” album appeared in 1979 and “The Samba” was one of the tracks. MCA combined the title with “Lonely Dancer” for a 12 inch released. But neither the single nor the LP charted.
Sadly, we lost the great Van McCoy in 1979 when he was only 39 years old.
