It is difficult to know how good a car battery is by just measuring voltage. What you need is a battery tester that measures the cranking amps, like this one. I was surprised what a nice little device it is, which seems well featured and accurate as far as I can tell. Tried on quite a few different batteries and on the car running.
It also tests the car's charging system, in other words the alternator.
This will probably pay for itself by being able to test second hand batteries, useful when buying a car, or buying second hand car batteres, or just knowing when your battery is nearing end of life. Might save you being stranded with a flat battery sometime.
I also added at the end a quick review of a battery charger I bought, quite useful, just not very accurate on Amps reading.
