For two years, they planned and trained meticulously to commit the perfect bank heist. Then, on January 16, 1950, the eleven-man gang, donning rubber Halloween masks, navy jackets, gloves, and rubber-soled shoes, broke into the Brink's Building in Boston, Massachusetts. Highly disciplined and perfectly executed, the heist was the largest in American history until 1984. It was only the group's own greed that resulted in their falling out and turning upon each other; the near death of one of the members, Joseph "Specs" O'Keefe would eventually convince him to spill the beans to the FBI.
Please note that this program was made in 1993. Of the nearly $3 million (almost $30 million today) that was stolen during the Great Brink's Robbery, only $58,000 of it was ever recovered. All of the robbers were paroled by 1971, except Joseph "Big Joe" McGinnis, the originator of the heist idea, who died in prison.
