Not all serial killers are caught. From 1967 to 1974, "Zodiac" claimed at least 37 victims, though only 5 were confidently attributed to him by police. As he eluded police time and time again, he sent taunting letters and cards to the San Francisco press. Four of these were cryptograms, of which only one was ever solved. 16 years after his last letter, the sign of the "Zodiac Killer" would resurface in New York City. Meanwhile, the cities of Seattle and San Diego was also dealing with their own elusive serial killers.
Please note that this program was made in 1995. Developments since then:
1) The original "Zodiac" killings remain unsolved as of 2020.
2) Heriberto Seda was convicted of the New York "Zodiac" killings in 1998 and sentenced to 232 years imprisonment.
3) The "Green River Killer" was eventually unmasked as Gary Ridgeway in 2001 through DNA evidence. Ridgeway was convicted of 49 murders and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. His last confirmed killing was in 1998, but he may have continued killing until 2001. He confessed to 71 murders in total.
4) Ridgeway had never travelled to San Diego, and thus cannot be responsible for the San Diego murders, which remain unsolved as of 2020.
5) In December 2020, over 50 years after Zodiac sent it, his 340-character cipher was solved, revealing the following message:
"HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME THAT WASNT ME ON THE TV SHOW WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT ABOUT ME AM NOT AFRAID OF THE GAS CHAMBER BECAUSE IT WILL SEND ME TO PARADICE ALL THE SOONER BECAUSE NOW HAVE ENOUGH SLAVES TO WORK FOR ME WHERE EVERYONE ELSE HAS NOTHING WHEN THEY REACH PARADICE SO THEY ARE AFRAID OF DEATH AM NOT AFRAID BECAUSEI KNOW THAT MY NEW LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE DEATH"
